| Date received : 2010-06-04 | We kicked off this year with VERY enthusiastic gymnasts who have been exposed to gymnastics for the very first time! Since I have been involved with Wallacedene-gymnastics this is the first time that we have boys included. The first competition was a club competition in March where the gymnasts actually won many medals. For most of the gymnasts this was their first experience of competitive gymnastics. The WP trials were held on 24 April at UCT where 9 girls and 1 boy made the WP-team. They were chosen to represent the Western Province on 22nd May at the Western Cape championships in Oudtshoorn. 10 Children had been selected from the Western Cape team to participate in the South Zone competition (WP, Boland, SWD and EP) at Stellenbosch. At this event Joureddia Williams excelled in her age group – Level 1 10/u – she won gold medals on 2 apparatus’, 2 silver medals on 2 apparatus’ (there are only 4 apparatus’ in which they participate) and came first OVERALL (gold). In her category she won BY FAR. Her sister Joslin, received bronze on one apparatus. (I understand she has her WP colours in road running and netball too!) After Joureddia participated, all the gymnasts and the trainers gathered round her; they just wanted to touch her! She just smiled at everyone – said nothing. Some of the EP – trainers took photo’s of her with all 5 medals around her neck! One woman stopped me and stuffed R100 note in my hand to give to her!! The other gymnasts’ trainers there, insist strongly that she should receive ‘high performance’ training. This would mean daily practise for a few hours at a time!! She obtained this achievement by training once a week for 1 – 1.5 hours at a time!! Incredible talent for a 9 year old!! | Date received : 2010-04-24 | Sixteen of the less fortunate children of Wallacedene Informal Settlement gets professional Gymnastics’ training at a local Gymnastics Club, by courtesy of the owner of the Club.. Children in the Informal Settlements seldom if ever get the opportunities to upliftment and development opportunities like extra professional sports training. We experienced a real wonder in 2005 when a lady from of a local Gymnastics Club initiated the forming of a gymnastics team with these less fortunate children. Many good and wonderful results have been achieved through this project. Of a previous group of sixteen children that receive coaching, five achieved provincial colours in 2007. It also ensures a healthy outlook on live to a child who otherwise would have been exposed to boredom and bad influence of gang groups who operates at an alarming rate in the Informal Settlements. Children need the feeling of belonging and given the circumstances under which children lives in the Squatter camps, this is a very worthy project to carry through. Every Friday a group of app. 16 kids come to Bellville-Uitsig church for gymnastic training. We identified those who can do well (and work hard) to compete at the Gymnastics Regional’s Competition at UTC on 24/04/2010. Where 9 did well and got WP colours in their level. But we need funds to support these 9 children to be able to explore their talents at the Western Cape Championships in Oudtshoorn. If they do well they can be selected for the Western Cape team to compete in Stellenbosch the 5th of June at the South Zone Champs. For now these children need to pay R190 each to compete at the Western Cape Champs in Oudtshoorn (R1665 for entering the 9 of them) We will also need funding for transport, food & overnight accommodation, etc. Roughly we look at an amount of R4,800 in total. We will greatly appreciate it, if you can consider helping us to send these children to the next level of competition, and give them a fair chance to excel in life. Gymnastics Regionals Competition at UCT – Results: * Joureddia Williams – 4th (out of 30 children) WP-team * Joslin Williams – 5th WP-team * Chara-Lee Manuel – 6th WP-team * Clementia Abrahams – 9th WP-team * Gretchen Bailey - 11th WP-team * Bonnavicia Morris – 12th WP-team * Jerodine George 7th - WP-team * Elmarie Manual – 11th WP-team * Boys: Only Emilio made the WP-team of the 4 boys who eventually participated.
